10 Tips when connecting with people in social settings

What does it take to connect with people in social settings? Here are 10 TIps...

1. Possess the ability to make others feel comfortable. 

2. Appear to be confident and at ease. 

3. Have an ability to laugh at themselves (not at others).

4. Show interest in others; they maintain eye contact, self-disclosure, ask questions, and actively listen. 

5. Convey a sense of energy and enthusiasm. 

6. Extend yourselves to others; they lean into a greeting with a firm handshake and a smile. 

7. Are well rounded, well informed, and well-mannered.

8. Share stories (humor). 

9. Introduce people to each other with an infectious enthusiasm that motivates conversation between the introducees. 

10. Convey respect and genuinely like people-the core of communicating.

Who celebrates your successes?

    
    How many people around you really celebrate the wins (successes) in your life?  Think about it for a moment. Or do the people around you get either; quiet, agitated, frustrated, or respond apathetically when you experience a win?  It sounds a little like jealousy or insecurity doesn't it?

    John Maxwell in his book, Winning with People says, "The true test of relationships is not only how loyal we are when friends fail, but how thrilled we are when they succeed."  A question I've been asking myself lately is, "Do I enjoy and root for the success of my friends and co-workers?" If we are honest, there is tension in answering that question. How? It can be easier to identify with the failure of people's endeavors than it is with their successes.

    I believe the people who know how to celebrate with you will become your life-long friends, because they realize the friendship is not based on insecurity and competition, but of encouragement, support, and loyalty.

DIG IT: The 30 Second Rule

I'm reading (another) book by John Maxwell, 25 Ways to Win With People. In the second chapter, Maxwell deals with a people skill principle called: The 30-Second Rule. Maxwell says, "within the first thirty seconds of a conversation, say something encouraging to a person." 

This may sounds easy and elementary, but actually putting this skill into practice is another story. Try observing your first 30-seconds of a interaction/conversation with another individual and see if you or the other person exemplifies this skill. 

The 30-Second Rule encourages us to do this; in the first 30 seconds of a conversation give people three things: attention, affirmation, and appreciation. So next time you make contact with a stranger, co-worker, family member, etc., begin by giving them your undivided attention, affirm them, appreciate them to the fullest. This is called giving others the"TRIPLE A TREATMENT."
